ANNIE KATE HAEGER WINS COLLEGIATE SINGLEHANDED NATIONALS AT CORNELL |
|
Eighteen
of the nation's best women and eighteen top men met this past weekend
to compete for the Singlehanded Collegiate Championships. Beulah's
Annie Kate Haeger was in a class by herself winning the women's title
by 50 points. Haeger's 18-race series total was 45. You do the math! A
most impressive victory. She defeated two prior national champions in
the third year of a freshman taking the title. Haeger, representing
Boston College, defeated last year's champ Krista Rhode from Coast
Guard (2nd in '08) and the prior year's Shannon Haeusler from College
of Charleston who finished 16th.
Haeger
was not without support from the Midwest. Lake Beulah sent two other
sailors who finished in the top ten. Stephanie Roble (Old Dominion
University) ended in 7th and Christine Porter (University of Wisconsin)
finished 10th. This marks the second consecutive appearance for Roble
and Porter.
Wisconsin sent a male representative, Kevin Campbell who finished 16th. Northwestern's Jimmy Costakis competed to a 17th.
The competitors and parents were introduced to a new sailing website, Sailgroove,
which features a youthful spin to music and sailing. Interviews by
winner Annie Haeger and competitior Christine Porter are listed on the
left side. Enjoy the speed.
